Here are some key tips to ensure your child’s first dance class is an enjoyable and stress-free experience.

1. Talk About What to Expect
Before the first class, explain to your child what will happen. Let them know they’ll meet a teacher, learn some new moves, and have fun with other kids. Let them know that grown ups don’t normally stay in the room for dance class but if they need you this week you can come inside.

2. Dress for Success
Make sure your child has the right attire. For their trial class/first lesson your child just needs to wear something comfortable and easy to move in (think leggings and a t-shirt) with socks or bare feet.

Check out our information pack for our dress code so you are aware of the requirements if your child chooses to continue. Almost all required dance gear is available for purchase at the studio.

3. Pack Essentials
Bring everything they’ll need: Socks, a water bottle, and any additional required accessories such as glasses. Label their items to avoid mix-ups.

4. Arrive Early
Get to the studio at 5-10 minutes before their first class starts. This gives your child time to settle in, explore their surroundings, and go to the toilet before class without feeling rushed.

5. Stay Positive and Supportive
If your child feels nervous, reassure them that it’s okay to feel that way. Remind them that the first day is all about having fun and trying something new.

7. Be Aware of Expectations for Parents
At Spinning Gumnuts: one parent/carer per child stays and dances with their child.

Other classes:
We are encourage parents to drop and go if possible to minimise distractions in class. We completely understand your young dancer may need you to stay on the first lesson, thats ok! We recommend letting your child know in advance that grown ups usually don’t stay in the room in order to make this transition easier later on.

8. Celebrate the First Day!
After class, ask your child how it went and celebrate their effort. Whether they were shy or jumped right in, praise them for trying something new.

We can’t wait to meet your child at their first lesson! Be sure to read through our information pack and let us know if you have any questions.

Happy dancing!
